Have you ever worried about a family member, a friend or elderly neighbor and their ability to get a proper meal?  If you have, you are not alone. Rhode Island ranks 8th in the nation for food insecurity among seniors. Only six other states and the District of Columbia report a higher rate of food insecurity among senior citizens.

Nearly 10 percent of our seniors—or more than 14,300 residents—are food insecure. We have the highest percentage—5.4 percent—of very food insecure seniors in the country.

Whether it is an aging parent who finds difficulty in preparing a healthy meal or your neighbor who is recovering at home from a sickness or recent hospitalization, many people in our communities are unable to access adequate nutrition.

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island meets the nutritional and other special needs of the homebound elderly in order to help them maintain their independent lifestyles. We provide a daily delivered meal, vital safety checks and emergency meals that allow our seniors to age in place.

Since 1969, Meals on Wheels of RI has provided daily meals to those who would otherwise lack the nutrition they need to maintain their health and independence. Each day our volunteers and drivers pack and deliver approximately 1,300 meals throughout the state. Our volunteers often are the only person a client might see that day. Over time friendships are made, relationships are built and, on occasion, lives are saved.

Because of your generous support and contributions, we are able to provide this meal and our service to our clients for only a suggested donation.

Last year, over 2,400 clients received a daily meal and the need continues to grow. Your donation and support of Meals on Wheels of RI will directly impact our ability to accomplish our mission and continue to fight senior hunger in Rhode Island.

Another way to support us is by creating a lasting legacy through your will. Your will serves as the road map to direct your last intentions with respect to the distribution of your resources and property. More profoundly, it is a summation of one’s life and a final opportunity to recognize the people and charitable causes you cherish. A bequest designated to Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island qualifies you to be recognized in the Joseph N. Brown Legacy Circle. Please consider including Meals on Wheels of RI in your will. You can speak with your financial advisor, or call the development office at 401-351-6700, ext. 120 for more information.

Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is a nonprofit organization funded in part by the Rhode Island Division of Elderly Affairs. We depend on and are grateful for the Charitable Gifts made by you, our generous donors.
