2007 Agency Operating Budget
Meals on Wheels of RI's operating budget for 2007 totals approximately $4,735,000. The primary services these dollars fund include our Nutrition Programs, both Home Delivered and Congregate, Case Management Services and our Volunteer Guardianship Program. The largest component of the budget, our Home Delivered Nutrition program, comprises 68% of the total budget. The chart below depicts the service components of our 2007 budget.

2006 Home Delivered Revenue Sources
Although the Home Delivered program receives Federal Title IIIC funding through the RI Department of Elderly Affairs as well as some state monies, the audited Home Delivered activity for 2006 demonstrates this program’s increasing dependence on client contributions and revenue received through the Federal Waiver program for clients who cannot afford to make a contribution on their own. Although the suggested contribution is $3.00 per meal, on average in 2006 each client donated $1.60 towards the cost of his/her daily meal. Without this source of revenue and the waiver funds received on behalf of low income clients, the agency would have to raise this money through fundraising to maintain the current level of service. As the chart below shows, the overall percentage of client contributions and waiver funds received total 43% of the revenue required to operate this program in 2006.

2006 Home Delivered Expenses
In 2006, the agency delivered 553,148 meals to approximately 4,584 different clients. The average cost of a Home Delivered meal in 2006 was $3.31. Including administrative costs, the average price of a meal rises to $5.27. As the following chart shows, the cost of meals is the primary component in the Home Delivered program budget.

Home Delivered Service History
The elderly population is the largest and fastest growing component of the Rhode Island community. The Home Delivered meal is a key factor in the ability of a Rhode Island elder to age with dignity in the setting of one's own home. With medical care extending the lives of all people, the trend is an ever increasing demand for our service. The chart below shows the number of meal milestones achieved by the agency over the past 34 years. In 2007, Meals on Wheels estimates that it will serve over 608,000 meals to qualified elderly clients.
