Congregate Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers of all ages are welcome and are needed at the dining sites to support the congregate program.

We have many opportunities available at our sites across the city of Providence. Dining Room hours are generally from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. People who are interested in volunteering at a congregate site may volunteer for as many as five days a week or as little as two days per week and the hours are flexible as well.

Some of the volunteer opportunities available include greeting people when they arrive to the site, setting tables, serving food and beverages, cleaning-up after the meal, helping with record-keeping and being a member of the Nutrition Council.

The Dining Site Manager at each site submits the number of hours each volunteer has worked to the Congregate Department of Meals on Wheels. The hours are kept on file for the annual volunteer recognition luncheon, which is held in the spring. Each volunteer is recognized with state certificates, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island Congregate Volunteer pins, and awards.

Each fall we conduct a volunteer training & conference to which all volunteers are invited to attend.

Federal Regulations do not allow the dining sites to offer free meals to volunteers. However, volunteers of all ages may dine on a donation basis.

Volunteers are a very important part of the congregate program. It would be impossible to serve more than 300 meals a day to all of our dining room participants if not for our dedicated volunteers!
