Volunteering for Home Delivery

How do I become a Meals on Wheels of RI volunteer?
Anyone interested in volunteering for Meals on Wheels of RI should call our main office at 351-6700 to schedule an interview with our Volunteer Coordinator.

What services does a Meals on Wheels volunteer provide?
Volunteers deliver hot lunches to homebound seniors, between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and no later than 2:00 p.m. Our volunteers also provide the warmth of a friendly smile.

Where do I deliver the meals? Do I need to know how to read a map?
We deliver meals throughout all of RI. Each meal delivery route is grouped into one area. Each volunteer will receive a "Route Sheet" providing detailed directions when picking up the meals.

How many people are on my route?
The maximum amount of clients allowed on a volunteer route is 20.

Do I receive any training before I start my route?
Yes. Most volunteers come to the main office for an informational interview with the Volunteer Coordinator. Once a route is assigned, a trained volunteer will provide "on the job training" until you feel comfortable enough to fly solo.

Do I need insurance for my car in order to drive on a Meals on Wheels Route?
YES. In accordance with state law, all of our volunteers must have their own car insurance.

Does Meals on Wheels reimburse me for my gas mileage?
Meals on Wheels of RI does offer reimbursement for mileage, however, most volunteers donate this tax-deductible expense.

Are there any social events for volunteers with Meals on Wheels of RI?
We hold events such as a volunteer appreciation banquet, golf tournament, walkathon, and "Big Wheels Deliver Meals." View the "Events Page" for more information.

Thank you for your interest in Meals on Wheels of RI' volunteer opportunities!
Our volunteers are truly the heart and soul of Meals on Wheels.
