Job Description


Job Title:                  Finance Director

Reports to:               Executive Director

FLSA Status:           Exempt, full time


Organizational Overview

The mission of Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is to meet the nutritional and other special needs of the elderly to help them maintain their independence. Since 1969, from Westerly to Woonsocket our staff and volunteers serve 1,200 meals each day. While the Home-Delivered Meal Program is the most recognized service, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island also has a Capital City Café Program, a Restaurant Voucher Program, Pet Food Program and a Senior Wish Program for those in need.



The Finance Director provides leadership to the strategic direction and operation of Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island’s finance and related functions such as business planning, budgeting, human resources, administration and IT.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner and offer strategic recommendations and solutions
    • Clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements including prior year and budget to actual performance
  • Oversee all financial, development, program and grant accounting
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
    • Ensure that contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements
  • Supervise accounts payable/receivable operations to ensure accuracy and timeliness of work
  • Supervise the billing process for government and private Medicaid reimbursement prepared by the home-delivered team
  • Prepare budgets in conjunction with the Executive Director
    • Create financial plans and budgets for various scenarios and multi-year projections
    • Engage in capital planning
    • Monitor progress and changes
    • Produce financial information for federal, state, local and private grant applications and manage awards, submit payment requests with appropriate back up documentation
    • Calculate in-direct cost rate on an annual basis to accompany grant applications
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process
  • Oversee and implement all necessary business policies/procedures, internal controls and accounting practices, update as necessary
  • Perform duties related to compensation, benefits administration and related activities
    • Process and manage weekly payroll and associated benefit payments
    • Review costs annually and adequacy and recommend modifications to the Executive Director
    • Ensure timely completion of Form 5500
  • Oversees the information technology and relationship with third party vendor
  • Manage external and vendor relationships (Financial institutions, investment firm, payroll, insurance, benefits, auditors, healthcare partners, etc.)
  • Effectively communicate and present financial matters to the Executive Director, funders, health care partners, finance committee and board of directors using a mix of communication strategies
  • Attend and participate in meeting with the Board of Directors, finance committee, staff meetings and special events
  • Keep informed of current issues and innovation
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends
  • Other duties as assigned


Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a B.A. in accounting, business or a related field
  • At least 5 years of broad financial leadership and operations management experience
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), OMB Uniform Grant Guidance and other body rules
  • Experience with grant management, non-profit fundraising and healthcare billing

  • Computer proficiency (MS Excel; Word; accounting, donor, billing and reporting software)
  • Sound professional judgment
  • Proven ability to identify, navigate, and successfully interact within the dynamics of a fast paced environment
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds
