More Than a Meal Study

Meals on Wheels of RI was honored to be one of the eight programs nationwide that participated in astudy from Brown University’s Center for Gerontology and Healthcare Research funded by the AARP Foundation. Dr. Kali Thomas, PhD, a former MOWRI volunteer and granddaughter of a MOWRI client, designed and executed the study, which proves a home-delivered meal program has a positive impact on our clients.
The study showed that those requesting meal delivery are significantly more vulnerable than the average aging American and that those who received daily-delivered meals experienced the greatest improvements in health and quality of life indicators over the study period. The most vulnerable of our recipients, those who live alone, were more likely to report decreases in worry about being able to remain in home and improvements in feelings of isolation and loneliness over the study period.
This important research proves what we’ve always known: Meals on Wheels of RI’s services are a vital component to providing our state’s seniors peace of mind and a feeling of safety, allowing them to maintain their independence and dignity. We truly provide more than just a meal!
