Every weekday morning, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island volunteer drivers gather at 20 sites across the state, ready to deliver nutritious meals to frail seniors and other homebound Rhode Islanders.
With those meals, our volunteer drivers also give our clients—and their families—the comfort of knowing someone is checking in on them each day. This vital socialization service—which helps thousands of at-risk Rhode Islanders remain safe living in their own homes—often leads to rewarding friendships that help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation for our homebound clients.
Below is a sampling of notes we have recently received that let us know the work we are doing to better the lives of our clients and their loved ones is making a real difference.
From a client’s daughter:
“My mom was so appreciative of the birthday card she received from Meals on Wheels of RI. I believe your program is the best in the state for assisting seniors. It has been a Godsend to my mom, who has been undergoing cancer therapy.”
From a North Smithfield client:
“I am a senior who has been getting your wonderful meals. I’m enclosing some money I received for Christmas. Thank you for helping me out in this time of need.”
(Although there is no financial obligation for receiving home-delivered meals, we accept a $3.00 donation per meal when possible.)
From a client’s child:
“I want you to know how much your services are appreciated. Meals on Wheels of RI is a large reason why we can keep our mother in her own home, where she wants to be.”
From a client following a snowy day:
“Thank you to all the volunteer drives who still managed to deliver (on time) lunches to those who are housebound. I say hurrah to them a very large well done.”
From another client:
“I have been blessed with Meals on Wheels. I give thanks to God because you care if I eat. You also seek me when I am not home until you find me. Thank you.”
