Joe Brown Society

When individuals include Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island in their estate plans, they help ensure we can continue our mission for years to come. We invite you to join today!

In 1969, while working on his Master’s Degree in the Gerontology Program at University of Rhode Island, Joseph Brown founded the RI Meals on Wheels Program. Working originally out of Grace Church in Providence with his wife Fern and 17 volunteers, he led RI Meals on Wheels to become one of the largest such programs in the country, and the only state-wide program. He served as Executive Director for 22 years, and on the Board of Directors for 45 years. Elected as a Lifetime Member in 2011, he continued to attend every meeting he could. At the time of his death in 2014, 17,493,528 million meals had been served in RI.

Like Joseph Brown, you have the power to make a difference for future generations to meet the nutritional and other special needs of homebound seniors. As a vital community resource, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is so much more than a meal for our state’s homebound seniors – we also provide important safety checks and needed opportunities for socialization.

If you have named Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island in your will, trust, or as an IRA beneficiary, please let us know so that we can ensure your gift is used according to your wishes. Notifying us of your plans will enable us to plan for the use of your future gift. However, if you prefer to remain anonymous, we will keep your name and gift in strict confidence. Please contact Meghan Grady at (401) 351-6700 or [email protected] for more information.
