PROVIDENCE, RI—Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island (MOWRI) announces that Christina Pitney, senior vice president, government programs at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI), has been elected as president of its board of directors for 2024-2026.
Pitney was elected president leading up to MOWRI’s annual meeting on June 12 at the Squantum Association. She has been a member of the board of directors since 2021 and most recently served as board treasurer.
“I am honored and overjoyed to serve this incredible organization and to work alongside our
esteemed board, exceptional staff, and committed volunteers to continue to advance health equity through strategic innovation across Rhode Island,” Pitney said. “Now, in year two of our strategic plan, we are doing more than we ever have to meet the nutritional and social needs of our clients so that they can maintain safe and independent lifestyles.”

At BCBSRI, Pitney oversees the financial and operational performance of Medicare and Medicaid, including programs to support members nutritional needs. Under her leadership, BCBSRI’s Medicare Advantage plan was the first in Rhode Island to receive a 5-Star designation from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. She also oversees BCBSRI’s BlueRI for Duals plan for Rhode Islanders dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.
“Christina is an invaluable partner in our work to create a Rhode Island where people live well-nourished lives with independence and dignity,” said MOWRI Executive Director Meghan Grady. “We are grateful for her leadership and guidance, and that of our entire board of directors, as we grow to offer more Rhode Islanders additional programming and services.”
Pitney has been with BCBSRI since 2014. Prior to her current role, Pitney was vice president of, corporate strategy and chief of staff in the office of the CEO and president.
She holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Connecticut-Hartford. She previously was board chair for Girls on the Run Rhode Island and has been a volunteer basketball coach for the Town of East Greenwich since 2018. She was awarded Providence Business News’ Business Women Award, Woman to Watch for Healthcare Services in 2022 and a Providence Business News 40 under 40 honor in 2019.
Elected for their first three-year term on MOWRI’s board of directors are Sarah Amin, PhD, MPH, assistant professor and director of community nutrition education, University of Rhode Island; Nathan Beauvais, CFP, CIMA, financial advisor, Sowa Financial Group as board treasurer; Sean Buchanan, CFO, Génere Family Businesses; Jay Longley, senior consultant, Envision Technology Advisors; Becky Lowry, SPHR, AVP, talent strategy & operations, CVS Health; and Marcus Mitchell, owner, Shere Strategy Experiences.
